First flush all the old fluid out. Then maintain a small amount of positive flow before starting the engine. After starting the engine modulate flow by hand to ensure engine doesn't overheat. Remember normally when you start the engine cold the coolant matches the outside air temp. I built this system to run the engine without the radiator fan. Lesson learned is that you can run the engine for short periods without the fan but with the radiator. The thermostat will try its best to regulate temps. This avoids the inevitable rust associated with running straight water. It's no problem to flush the system like this and replenish the coolant within a couple days but beyond that's it's better to just run with the radiator.
